You can’t just set up your website and leave it as it is. You’re going to have to make changes to it, to make it work effectively in an ever changing online environment. Here’s how you can edit your website effectively and get it looking great, no matter what you need to do to it.
Proofread and Edit Your Articles
A lot of the time, text will need to be edited to reflect changes online. You may need to change a headline to bring in more readers, or change some body text as facts have changed. No matter what you need to change, it can be quite simple to change it up.
“If you’re using a tool like WordPress to build your site, then making changes is easy,” says web designer Graham Johnson. “Find the page you want to edit, and there should be a link to ‘edit’ it. Hit the link, make the changes you need, and hit ‘save'”. If you’re using tools like this, then you can make it easy for yourself to go back and make edits as needed.
This goes for other website building tools, such as Divi Visual Builder. All you have to do is click on the text you want to change, and edit it. Once it’s changed to your satisfaction, click ‘save’ and you’re done.
Add Well-Looking Images in High Resolution
Images are important to your site, to add visual interest. Later on, you may want to change the images that you have displayed. For example, you may have had a rebrand and so want to use the new imagery you’ve been given.
Again, if you’re using WordPress, all you have to do is click the ‘add media’ button, and upload the image you want to use from your computer. You can insert it into the site, and then make changes as needed. For example, you can change the sizing, or add alt text to the image.
Otherwise, you’ll want to make sure that the new images you’re uploading are overwriting the old ones. If you need to just make minor changes, it can often be best to download the file, edit it yourself, then re-upload it to the sever. You’ll get the changes you need, without having to do a lot of work.
Changing Formatting to Create Rich Content
“The way you change formatting will depend on the website building tools you’ve used,” says web designer Tina Powell.
“You’ll need to find out how to change the formatting in your tool set. Once you’ve done that, it’s very simple to change things up.”
Again, let’s take WordPress as an example. When you go into the edit page, you’ll see buttons on top of the toolbar that let you change formatting. These include bold, strikethrough, and italic buttons. Play around with these to your heart’s content. You won’t affect anything until you click ‘save’, so if it goes wrong you can ‘cancel’ the changes you’ve made.
If you’re more involved in the creation of your site, then the formatting can be changed via HTML commands. It’s easy to look up the exact command you need in order to change something on your site. For example, if you need to make something bold, looking for ‘HTML command bold’ will tell you exactly what to do.
These tips will help you get most basic edits to your website done. In most building tools you can play with settings without affecting the site, so don’t be afraid to experiment and try things out. You’ll soon be an expert, and be able to make changes whenever and wherever they’re needed.
